Punk poet, musician and theatre maker Brigitte Aphrodite has been making a name for herself with performances at Leeds and Reading Festivals, Bestival and Latitude under her belt, not to mention supporting both Kate Nash and Josie Long on their UK tours.
Aphrodite is also a proud mentor for youth charity Arts Emergency and has achieved even more success in the form of her self-penned musical My Beautiful Black Dog which has received much critical acclaim. This rising star has sent us a testimony full of praise with regards to her experience studying with Brian Astbury at East 15 Acting School. She states:
"Brian Astbury teaches you to be a FANTASTIC multifaceted actor. He teaches the absolute importance of making your own work! Never was a truer ethos shared!
The incredible thing about Brian's method is that all of his teachings resonate, reverberate and echo inside of you for years after. He equips you with a metaphorical industry tool belt that seems to ferment, become stronger and available to you when you need it the most. Interestingly, this magical belt is not only very handy throughout your career in show biz (cigar currently hanging out of my mouth), but in your life as well."
Aphrodite looks back at her training and further reflects on the solid foundation of her career given to her by Brian:
"At the time of my training, I had no idea of the power that was being bestowed upon me. Brian showed the path towards creating my own work and building my own future. He made me and many others on our course feel like we could create anything with time, hard work, dedication, realism and positivity. He was right! Our alumni are proof. He invited a variety of industry professionals to teach on the course and, on reflection, it was like experiencing a mirror image of the industry. That experience is beyond valuable."
In summary of the time she spent training with Brian, Aphrodite states:
"Above all, Brian's practice made it clear that the power of theatre/TV/music/film doesn't just delight an audience, it can change the world around us for the better! His training ignited a fire in my belly that will ensure I will forever endeavour to make work that matters. This ethos has provided me with the foundations I've needed to live a very fulfilling life working in the arts.
In every theatre I go to I meet ex-students of Brian who are not only working in the industry but changing the face of it."
Thanks Aphrodite for your testimony!
